Happy Scoobies Wayne and Trevor completing a full Scuba Review

Please take the time to read through. It could be the precursor to a whole new way of being and thinking. Let the FUN begin by learning to Scuba Dive with Scubaco Ltd

A PADI 5 Star Scuba Retail Store and Scuba Diving Training Centre with ELITE Professional Status

S C U B A – WHAT DOES IT MEAN? THE FACTS!

Let’s start with the most basic fact about scuba diving of all. What does SCUBA stand for? An acronym, the word scuba stands for:

“Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus”

It was initially used to describe the system that first allowed divers to go underwater without being connected to an air supply on the surface. To become a certified diver today, you need to take and pass a scuba diving certification class. There are national agencies that administer the class worldwide. The one that we at SCUBACO LTD are affiliated with is PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors).  We are a PADI 5* Centre and have recently been awarded the ‘Elite Professional’ Status. Having a PADI certification means that it is a globally recognised Scuba Qualification. However, you don’t have to qualify to have a go at Scuba Diving. You can have a go at introductory courses such as the ‘PADI Bubblemaker’ or, even have an Underwater Scuba Party at the age of 8 yrs, or, PADI ‘Discover Scuba’ from the age of 10 yrs. Should you want to qualify as a Scuba Diver then this would mean completing the PADI Open Water course which can be achieved from the age of 10 yrs.

Children from the age of 8yrs can have a go at Scuba Diving. At 10 yrs old they can qualify! What a good start to a child's life time of adventure

The PADI Open Water qualification course at one time was ratified on the National Qualification Framework (NQF), which means that it had educational kudos. For example, equivalent to NVQ , GCSE and Duke of Edinburgh. Unfortunately, the funding got pulled for this but the Open Water Course still remains in the format of a building block for a number of important key skills.  As a former teacher in education, I am more than happy to tutor youngsters through the theory they need to complete in order to gain full certification for Scuba Diving. I’m also happy to explain how KEY SKILLS are integral to the qualification courses that all from the age of 10 yrs to adulthood plan to undertake.

NERVOUS ABOUT SCUBA DIVING?

Scuba diving isn’t for everyone. For some, the whole idea of going underwater and ‘breathing’ seems a weird and strange concept than doesn’t quite compute. Usually, there are KEY factors where there is doubt. Consider how many you can TICK of the following:

Nervous, Anxious, Stark Raving Bonkers idea, Claustrophobic mindset, Worried, Reservations, Unsure, Dithering, Reluctant, Past experience in water not good (even from school), Scared, Expect to have to be a good swimmer. And….that is just listing a few things that go through some peoples’ minds how are unsure or dismissive of the sport.

First steps. Easy does it here with Carolann, Master Scuba Instructor and Elite Professional at Scubaco Ltd and 'Scuba Diva' Louise. Louise had only just recently learned to swim! How amazing it that :-)

TURNING NEGATIVES INTO POSITIVES – Handy Tips

Building TRUST is Paramount – After all, you would want to be with an Instructor that put you at ease and can handle you and your nervousness. You would want an Instructor to listen to your apprehensions and an Instructor who could help you turn these negatives into positives by being pro-active and offer solutions in a caring and nurturing way. This is something we specialise in and pride ourselves on being at SCUBACO. Working with an Instructor you TRUST and can develop an affinity with, is a MUST, It’s a KEY FACTOR!

Amazing what can be achieved in the right hands. First time EVER experience for 'Scuba Diva' Louise :-)

ASK QUESTIONS

There is nothing wrong in asking questions. I encourage this as is dispels myths. People listen to others and can easily pick up on negatives that are quite random. All this without having experienced SCUBA itself! Abit like experiencing childbirth…the outcome is the same but the individual experience is very different and very individual. How YOU personally experience something will help set your mind, whether by words or actions.

PATIENCE

They say ‘Is a Virtue’. A good Instructor will demonstrate oodles of this. Learning to Scuba dive shouldn’t be a quick fix. 2 days and ‘I’m a Scuba Diver’ just doesn’t cut it for me. Like with anything we do in life (if we want to be good at it), we need to master the skills to become accomplished. Experience plays a big part and patience.

Patience and understanding is 'key'. It's not just 'another sport'. It can change your whole perception of the World when you are trained correctly

GROUP SIZE

We at SCUBACO work with small groups or a 1:1 where required. It’s all about the QUALITY of provision, not the quantity. The pathway to exploration is by gradual nurturing and experience. This can then set the ground work for the exploration of something wonderful for years to come and can totally change the dimensions of holiday, either individually, as a couple or as a family. Being able to visit the aquatic world is truly amazing and spectacular. Scuba Diving doesn’t mean ‘Deep’, it means breathing under water. Small group sizes are likely to help you feel less anxious knowing that you are accounted for rather than in a big pack of endless people in the water

BREATHING

It is crucial that as a human, we BREATHE. There is no magic breathing in Scuba diving. At SCUBACO we teach you how to overcome panic breathing and being relaxed. Yoga and meditation are two good examples of good breathing technique. With me, you will be learning to breathe through ‘THE BREATHY THING’ before you know it.

Compose yourself, breathe and relax. Patience is a virtue! We have this in bucket loads as we remember what it was like to start from the very beginning

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge is ‘POWER’, but too much can get in the way of progress. Slowly, slowly does it. A good Instructor will detect nervousness and apprehension and should be knowledgeable enough to be able to design the course accordingly and put you at ease. We at SCUBACO believe this is something we are good at and our repeat business and word of mouth stands testament to that fact.

LISTEN AND BREAKING THROUGH THE BARRIER

It is important that you listen to the Instructor. This will allow you to follow instructions correctly and positively. Looking into the eyes of your Instructor can be very re-assuring. It should provide you with some positive energy knowing that your Instructor is there helping you to keep safe. You should be at one, together. What should follow is a truly amazing experience of weightlessness. The nearest sensation you will get to flying up, down, left or right!

And...We're off! Louise soon got to grips with picking up the hoops of the pool floor whilst staying neutrally buoyant. Well done. So proud :-)

MORAL OF THE STORY

BE POSITIVE.  The Instructor you chose is imperative if you are going to follow through with the sport. You and the Instructor should be able to develop a mutual and bonding trust from the onset. Even at enquiry stage. Be PATIENT. Whatever we do in life that involves a new experience takes time to nurture and perfect. Learning to Scuba Dive takes time to evolve and CONFIDENCE and EXPERIENCE play key roles. Enjoying the experience should be a big part of everything you do with your Instructor, no matter how ‘wobbly’ you felt at first. Be PROUD of yourself no matter baby steps you overcame. You did it remember, you took the first steps to experience the wonders of the World and don’t forget…we are all different after all… we are HUMAN!
